FYC materials take many forms, from basic physical media, including DVDs, to far more elaborate objects. Felt-covered full-color books, dioramas, booklets made of metal, wood, and plastic, USB drives encased in boxes, and objects such as bobbleheads are among the formats these items can take. As promotional materials, they are only intended to last as long as they are needed - at most a year - so nearly a decade later many are falling to pieces, their batteries long dead and glue seams failing. Preservation can be a challenge.

Curated from the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture Collection, this exhibit includes objects on loan from Robert Thompson, Trustee Professor of Television, Radio, and Film at Syracuse University. Robles-Gordon’s work has long been rooted in self-awareness, reflection and repair—of the self, of collective memory and of the environments we inhabit. Drawing from Afro-Caribbean spiritual traditions, decolonial histories, feminist thought and ecological consciousness, her artworks operate as sites of reckoning and renewal. They ask viewers to confront inherited systems of harm while offering space for breath, ritual, protection and transformation. The exhibition is organized into three interrelated sections, each articulating a distinct yet overlapping mode of healing and awareness.

As a focal aspect of this exhibition, Robles-Gordon creates installations that build upon history, personal and ancestral memory and Afro-futurism to establish bird and totemic like data transference structures. Her installation formula is grounded in visual and/or asymmetrical balance. Each installation centralizes the idea of a bird. Artworks are arranged in pairs. At the heart of the exhibition is a curatorial inquiry: How do artists with disabilities navigate the art world—and the world at large—on their terms? And how does that navigation inform their work, influence its reception, and expand the field of cultural production? The goal is not to position disability as a central or singular theme, but to acknowledge it as one of many intersecting conditions—of body, mind, culture, history—that inform artistic practice. In doing so, this exhibition prompts us to reconsider who gets seen, whose experiences shape the canon, and how institutions can create more equitable conditions for artistic participation and recognition.

Exhibiting artists include Beverly Baker, Derrick Alexis Coard, Courttney Cooper, Joseph Grigley, Em Kettner, Reverend Joyce McDonald, William Scott, Kambel Smith, Katz Tepper, Melvin Way, and Peter Williams.

The Temple of Our Survival is new video work commissioned by Light Work for projection at UVP exploring what survival means and looks like through a series of interviews conducted by the artist with local care workers, land stewards, and cultural workers in her nomadic film set and project space.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Wormsley will be present for a special indoor film screening and panel talk on Thursday, March 19.

About the Work

The Temple of Our Survival
2026

While in-residence in Syracuse, Wormsley worked with Sankofa Reproductive Health and Healing Center, setting up her eponymous traveling film set and workshop space “The Temple of Our Survival” for the month of July. A work of art in its own right, the Temple is a massive tent draped in quilts made of vibrant traditional fabrics and sewn by the artist in designs invoking her own ancestral histories of migration and search for refuge.

In Wormsley’s own words, “This set is mobile not just for convenience but as a signifier of our relationship to land and landscape. That relationship is migrant. Ancestrally adapting to weather, plant-life, water and resources in every part of this country and beyond. The resilience is of the spirit.”

The Temple of Our Survival filmset has travelled to a total of eight sites around the country. At each of these, the artist held workshops using herbs grown in her grandmother’s garden and conducted interviews with local care workers, land stewards, and cultural workers, each of whom shared their own stories of and strategies for survival.

About the Artist

Alisha B Wormsley is an interdisciplinary artist and cultural producer. Her main concern is to transform the world into a place where people can live. Her work has been shown at REDCAT in Los Angeles, Participant, INC, Cue Arts, and the Bronx Museum in NYC, and at the Andy Warhol Museum and Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh, among many other venues. In 2020, Wormsley launched an artist residency for Black artists who M/other called Sibyls Shrine that supports over 150 artists. Wormsley is a 2022 Guggenheim Fellow in Fine Arts and an Assistant Professor of Social Practice at Carnegie Mellon School of Art.

In addition to being awarded a UVP Residential Commission, this project has won an Anonymous was a Woman NYFA Award, a Pittsburgh Foundation grant and the Sundance Interdisciplinary grant.

While the musical activities of adults in Terezín have been well-documented, the musical experiences of children in the ghetto remain largely unexplored. This talk bridges that critical gap in our understanding of life in Theresienstadt.

Drawing from her dissertation research, Professor Amanda Greenbacker-Mitchell ’17, G’22 examines the nature of children's music engagement while imprisoned in the Terezín (Theresienstadt) ghetto during the Holocaust between 1941 and 1945. Specifically, she elucidates the ways children engaged with music in Terezín, and categorizes those experiences into formal, non-formal, and informal music engagement practices.

This research offers valuable insights for scholars and practitioners in music education, general education, and Holocaust history. Through examining the nature of music engagement in Terezín, we may better understand the daily lives of young people in the ghetto, the creation of educational infrastructures in unstable circumstances, and the rationale and practices of music education under perilous conditions.

About Amanda Greenbacker-Mitchell ’17, G’22

Amanda Greenbacker-Mitchell ’17, G’22 is Assistant Professor of Music Education, Director of the Wind Ensemble, and Music Education Area Head at Northeastern Illinois University.

Greenbacker-Mitchell has presented her research at state, national, and international conferences, including the upcoming Holocaust Educational Foundation of Northwestern University (HEFNU) Lessons and Legacies Emerging Scholars Conference in Worcester, MA (2025), the National Association for Research in Music Education Music Research and Teacher Education National Conference in Atlanta, Georgia (2024), the International Society for Music Education conference in Helsinki, Finland (2024), and the International Association of Genocide Scholars in association with the Educators Institute for Human Rights Alliance Against Genocide Summer Conference (2024).

Her research interests include historical research in music education, music learning practices within the context of human atrocities, social and historical contextualization of learning practices, interdisciplinary methodologies in music education, preservice music teacher education, and Holocaust music history and education.

She earned degrees from the University of Missouri (Ph.D., Music Education) and Syracuse University (M.Mus., Wind Conducting; B.Mus., Music Education). She served as a teaching assistant for both the Syracuse and Missouri band programs, and while at Syracuse, she was awarded the Chancellor’s Citation for Excellence in Student Research for her interdisciplinary music performance curriculum written on behalf of the
(Washington, DC).

Greenbacker-Mitchell is an active conductor, clinician, and adjudicator, having worked with bands across the United States. She is a passionate guest lecturer on the repertoire, circumstances, and musicians affected by the Holocaust, presenting on music as a sociopolitical mechanism of the Holocaust.

In this movement-based workshop, Chandra will explore the Navarasa: nine emotional states from Indian classical arts. Participants will explore how emotion reshapes physicality—how intention alters timing, how feeling changes weight, how internal states create texture and presence. Through structured improvisation and compositional tools, dancers discover how to embody emotion rather than perform it. Students will work physically with concepts such as articulation, rhythm, expression and spatial awareness, translating traditional tools into contemporary and personal movement vocabularies.

This is not about learning a new style. It’s about expanding your own expressive vocabulary. This is for those seeking to deepen artistry, emotional intelligence in performance and cross-cultural dialogue in contemporary practice. The workshop emphasizes application and integration rather than stylistic replication and explores how the techniques of Indian classical dance can be applied to a variety movement practices and choreographic processes.

Open to all who enjoy dance, regardless of your experience level. Those interested in physical theater are also welcome!

Pali Chandra is an Indian classical dancer, choreographer and educator whose work bridges traditional Indian forms with contemporary dance, physical theatre and interdisciplinary performance. She has collaborated extensively with artists, choreographers, theatre-makers and institutions across India, Europe and the United States, contributing her expertise to cross-cultural and experimental projects. Chandra’s teaching and collaborative practice emphasize dialogue, embodied research, and the creative exchange between classical techniques and contemporary movement practices.

Carrie Mae Weems is one of the most influential artists working today, internationally recognized for her powerful explorations of identity, history, power and social justice across photography, text, installation and video. For more than four decades, her groundbreaking work has examined the African American experience and the construction of historical narrative. Her recent honors include the National Medal of Arts (2024), the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography (2021) and a MacArthur Fellowship (2013), often referred to as the “Genius Grant,” awarded in recognition of her extraordinary originality and lasting impact on contemporary visual culture.

Voting takes place during both nomination and final voting periods. Only dues-paying members of the Television Academy are eligible to vote, though they can be influenced by others in the industry. Ethical rules govern the type and value of FYC materials. Gifts such as cars and Rolex watches are not allowed, but elaborate packages of the type shown in this exhibit are acceptable.

FYC materials take many forms, from basic physical media, including DVDs, to far more elaborate objects. Felt-covered full-color books, dioramas, booklets made of metal, wood, and plastic, USB drives encased in boxes, and objects such as bobbleheads are among the formats these items can take. As promotional materials, they are only intended to last as long as they are needed - at most a year - so nearly a decade later many are falling to pieces, their batteries long dead and glue seams failing. Preservation can be a challenge.

Curated from the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture Collection, this exhibit includes objects on loan from Robert Thompson, Trustee Professor of Television, Radio, and Film at Syracuse University. The Bleier Center holds hundreds of uncatalogued promotional materials; those appearing in this exhibit are but a sample.

Robles-Gordon’s work has long been rooted in self-awareness, reflection and repair—of the self, of collective memory and of the environments we inhabit. Drawing from Afro-Caribbean spiritual traditions, decolonial histories, feminist thought and ecological consciousness, her artworks operate as sites of reckoning and renewal. They ask viewers to confront inherited systems of harm while offering space for breath, ritual, protection and transformation. The exhibition is organized into three interrelated sections, each articulating a distinct yet overlapping mode of healing and awareness.

As a focal aspect of this exhibition, Robles-Gordon creates installations that build upon history, personal and ancestral memory and Afro-futurism to establish bird and totemic like data transference structures. Her installation formula is grounded in visual and/or asymmetrical balance. Each installation centralizes the idea of a bird. Artworks are arranged in pairs. One for the left side and its pair on the right side to create the wings. Ultimately, manifesting transference mechanisms in an asymmetrical arrayment of aesthetic and didactic messaging.

At the heart of the exhibition is a curatorial inquiry: How do artists with disabilities navigate the art world—and the world at large—on their terms? And how does that navigation inform their work, influence its reception, and expand the field of cultural production? The goal is not to position disability as a central or singular theme, but to acknowledge it as one of many intersecting conditions—of body, mind, culture, history—that inform artistic practice. In doing so, this exhibition prompts us to reconsider who gets seen, whose experiences shape the canon, and how institutions can create more equitable conditions for artistic participation and recognition.

Exhibiting artists include Beverly Baker, Derrick Alexis Coard, Courttney Cooper, Joseph Grigley, Em Kettner, Reverend Joyce McDonald, William Scott, Kambel Smith, Katz Tepper, Melvin Way, and Peter Williams.

The exhibition is curated by Daniel Fuller G’04 (Museum Studies, College of Visual and Performing Arts).

In this influential text, Clark posited that the presence of the nude in art, existed above and beyond cultural circumstances, as a timeless, almost abstract ideal. He advanced a distinction between "naked" and "nude," with the latter explained as an idealization, or an evocation of timeless ideals. To the contrary, this exhibition presents nudity in art as a phenomenon that is time-bound and culturally determined.

This exhibition is curated by Wayne Franits (Distinguished Professor and Department Chair, Art and Music Histories) and the eight senior Art History majors enrolled in the Fall 2025 course HOA 498: Senior Seminar, Research and Professional Practice.

Madeleine will discuss the challenges of reporting on the U.S. military, how to craft compelling audio stories through data and documents, and the importance of longform investigative journalism.

Madeleine is a Peabody Award-winning investigative reporter and host of “In the Dark,” which joined The New Yorker’s slate of podcasts in 2023. “In the Dark” is among the most acclaimed programs in long-form audio journalism and won the Pulitzer Prize for audio reporting in 2025. The show also became the first podcast to win a George Polk Award, one of the top honors in journalism, in 2019.

Title:“The Design of Brazil’s Digital Transformation Policy: An Analysis of the Micro-Dimensions of Policy Instruments”

Abstract:The study examines the micro-dimensions of policy design within the digital transformation agenda across Brazilian states, with a particular focus on how governments select and combine policy instruments. The empirical analysis draws on regulatory documents published between 2019 and 2025. Findings show substantial variation in instrument configurations: while some states prioritize substantive tools—especially those tied to authority and organizational arrangements, such as digital strategies and platform architectures—others rely more heavily on procedural instruments. These distinct configurations produce different implementation styles. Substantive arrangements tend to generate more technical and operationally oriented policies, whereas procedural arrangements help build legitimacy, coordination, and adaptability. The study argues that balanced combinations of substantive and procedural instruments are essential for effective digital transformation policies.

For Your Consideration (FYC) promotional materials are sent to advertising and trade publications, actors, directors, screening attendees and tradespeople. Voting takes place during both nomination and final voting periods. Only dues-paying members of the Television Academy are eligible to vote, though they can be influenced by others in the industry. Ethical rules govern the type and value of FYC materials. Gifts such as cars and Rolex watches are not allowed, but elaborate packages of the type shown in this exhibit are acceptable.

FYC materials take many forms, from basic physical media, including DVDs, to far more elaborate objects. Felt-covered full-color books, dioramas, booklets made of metal, wood, and plastic, USB drives encased in boxes, and objects such as bobbleheads are among the formats these items can take. As promotional materials, they are only intended to last as long as they are needed - at most a year - so nearly a decade later many are falling to pieces, their batteries long dead and glue seams failing. Preservation can be a challenge.

Curated from the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture Collection, this exhibit includes objects on loan from Robert Thompson, Trustee Professor of Television, Radio, and Film at Syracuse University. The Bleier Center holds hundreds of uncatalogued promotional materials; those appearing in this exhibit are but a sample.

Robles-Gordon’s work has long been rooted in self-awareness, reflection and repair—of the self, of collective memory and of the environments we inhabit. Drawing from Afro-Caribbean spiritual traditions, decolonial histories, feminist thought and ecological consciousness, her artworks operate as sites of reckoning and renewal. They ask viewers to confront inherited systems of harm while offering space for breath, ritual, protection and transformation. The exhibition is organized into three interrelated sections, each articulating a distinct yet overlapping mode of healing and awareness.

As a focal aspect of this exhibition, Robles-Gordon creates installations that build upon history, personal and ancestral memory and Afro-futurism to establish bird and totemic like data transference structures. Her installation formula is grounded in visual and/or asymmetrical balance. Each installation centralizes the idea of a bird. Artworks are arranged in pairs. One for the left side and its pair on the right side to create the wings. Ultimately, manifesting transference mechanisms in an asymmetrical arrayment of aesthetic and didactic messaging.

At the heart of the exhibition is a curatorial inquiry: How do artists with disabilities navigate the art world—and the world at large—on their terms? And how does that navigation inform their work, influence its reception, and expand the field of cultural production? The goal is not to position disability as a central or singular theme, but to acknowledge it as one of many intersecting conditions—of body, mind, culture, history—that inform artistic practice. In doing so, this exhibition prompts us to reconsider who gets seen, whose experiences shape the canon, and how institutions can create more equitable conditions for artistic participation and recognition.

Exhibiting artists include Beverly Baker, Derrick Alexis Coard, Courttney Cooper, Joseph Grigley, Em Kettner, Reverend Joyce McDonald, William Scott, Kambel Smith, Katz Tepper, Melvin Way, and Peter Williams.

The exhibition is curated by Daniel Fuller G’04 (Museum Studies, College of Visual and Performing Arts).

In this influential text, Clark posited that the presence of the nude in art, existed above and beyond cultural circumstances, as a timeless, almost abstract ideal. He advanced a distinction between "naked" and "nude," with the latter explained as an idealization, or an evocation of timeless ideals. To the contrary, this exhibition presents nudity in art as a phenomenon that is time-bound and culturally determined.

What is certain in global affairs is that we are now at the end of an era. What is less certain is what will come next. The Trump administration has upended decades of American foreign affairs—tariffing friends while resetting ties with strategic competitors. The long-standing assumption of having a bloc of democracies to counterbalance China's authoritarian vision for the world has given way to a transactional approach that sees Beijing as another deal to be achieved. Have we given up on strategic competition? What's the next move for our closest allies and partners still anxious about Beijing but distanced from Washington? Regardless of who wins in 2028, how should a new generation of American leaders manage this evolved and evolving assumption about Washington's motivation and its role in the world?

Anka Lee is a national security expert with over two decades of experience leading large teams, including as deputy assistant secretary of defense for East Asia at the Pentagon, USAID deputy assistant administrator for multilateral affairs, and international policy director at the California State Assembly. He is a founding partner at the strategic consulting firm Scalare Advisors; distinguished fellow at the Wilson Center; and a senior advisor at DGA Group and Special Competitive Studies Project.

He has written for and appeared on The Atlantic, Bloomberg, The Diplomat, Just Security, Foreign Policy, NBC, Newsweek, POLITICO, Time, and San Francisco Chronicle. Anka began his career as a print and broadcast journalist in San Francisco and in California policy and politics. He was educated at UC Berkeley, Sacramento State, and Harvard University.

When anthropologists work on life projects that are part microhistory and part memoir, learning how to protect—or when necessary, break—research participants’ unspoken secrets becomes fundamental. Through an ethnographic account that begins with my family history, this lecture explores the challenges that are explicitly marked by knowing when to probe into secrets and knowing when to refrain from doing so.

Building on anthropological literature on silence and secrets, I write about the relationship between myself, an anthropologist, and my father, my research participant, as I piece together the lived experiences of my wider kin as a Chinese-Finnish mixed-race family living in Beijing under Mao Zedong’s rule.

At a time when careful monitoring and mutual surveillance geared people’s everyday affairs, I describe how secrets, self-enforced social forgetting, repression and disremembering explicitly shapes the biographical narratives of many that grew up in this insulated environment. Collaboration and co-production remain fundamental tools that allow me to probe into the gulf between silence and the stories that my interlocutors tell of themselves to protect silence.

In this presentation, Alex Corbitt, Assistant Professor of Literacy Education, shares findings from a youth-led program called The Worldbuilding Workshop. Over the course of a year, middle and high school participants took turns designing immersive storyworlds and facilitating six-week role-playing game (RPG) campaigns inspired by Dungeons & Dragons.

Drawing on literacy research, game studies, and conversation analysis, Alex examines how youth negotiated identities, rules, and textual references as they collaboratively composed worlds and narratives.

She has an equal love for creating both narrative imagery as well as surface design illustrations, and she is always interested in seeing the ways that they inform each other. In her narrative work, she loves creating compositions filled with color, texture and pattern. In her surface design work, you might see a tiny detail or subject fully blown out and examined, waiting to be put to life on a product. She also enjoys illustrating hand lettering and conveying messages that align with her values in a concrete way. You will often see themes like mindfulness, feminism and neurodiversity in her work, in addition to the cats, plants and flowers.

Ultimately, Cole hopes that the images she creates bring a sense of connection. She graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and currently lives in Rhode Island with her husband, son and cat.

The Visiting Artist Lecture Series, which features approximately 25 contemporary artists each semester, is free to attend and open to the public.

At the age of 16, Whittingham began to film her performances of popular guitar repertoire as a personal project, rapidly creating a large community of fans worldwide with over 50 million views. Having just signed exclusively to Decca Classics, recording continues to play an important part in Whittingham’s career. Her debut album “My European Journey,” released in 2021, was described as “a superb debut” by BBC Music Magazine. The recording led to her being chosen as one of Classic FM’s ‘Rising Star’ artists in 2022.

Whittingham began her studies at Chetham’s School of Music at the age of 11, where she now teaches alongside her former professor. She went on to gain a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London and graduated with both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. During her time at the Academy, she was awarded the Timothy Gilson Guitar Prize, a Diploma of the Royal Academy of Music and the Regency Award for distinguished studentship.

The Temple of Our Survival is new video work commissioned by Light Work for projection at UVP exploring what survival means and looks like through a series of interviews conducted by the artist with local care workers, land stewards, and cultural workers in her nomadic film set and project space.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Wormsley will be present for a special indoor film screening and panel talk on Thursday, March 19.

About the Work

The Temple of Our Survival
2026

While in-residence in Syracuse, Wormsley worked with Sankofa Reproductive Health and Healing Center, setting up her eponymous traveling film set and workshop space “The Temple of Our Survival” for the month of July. A work of art in its own right, the Temple is a massive tent draped in quilts made of vibrant traditional fabrics and sewn by the artist in designs invoking her own ancestral histories of migration and search for refuge.

In Wormsley’s own words, “This set is mobile not just for convenience but as a signifier of our relationship to land and landscape. That relationship is migrant. Ancestrally adapting to weather, plant-life, water and resources in every part of this country and beyond. The resilience is of the spirit.”

The Temple of Our Survival filmset has travelled to a total of eight sites around the country. At each of these, the artist held workshops using herbs grown in her grandmother’s garden and conducted interviews with local care workers, land stewards, and cultural workers, each of whom shared their own stories of and strategies for survival.

About the Artist

Alisha B Wormsley is an interdisciplinary artist and cultural producer. Her main concern is to transform the world into a place where people can live. Her work has been shown at REDCAT in Los Angeles, Participant, INC, Cue Arts, and the Bronx Museum in NYC, and at the Andy Warhol Museum and Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh, among many other venues. In 2020, Wormsley launched an artist residency for Black artists who M/other called Sibyls Shrine that supports over 150 artists. Wormsley is a 2022 Guggenheim Fellow in Fine Arts and an Assistant Professor of Social Practice at Carnegie Mellon School of Art.

In addition to being awarded a UVP Residential Commission, this project has won an Anonymous was a Woman NYFA Award, a Pittsburgh Foundation grant and the Sundance Interdisciplinary grant.

For Your Consideration (FYC) promotional materials are sent to advertising and trade publications, actors, directors, screening attendees and tradespeople. Voting takes place during both nomination and final voting periods. Only dues-paying members of the Television Academy are eligible to vote, though they can be influenced by others in the industry. Ethical rules govern the type and value of FYC materials. Gifts such as cars and Rolex watches are not allowed, but elaborate packages of the type shown in this exhibit are acceptable.

FYC materials take many forms, from basic physical media, including DVDs, to far more elaborate objects. Felt-covered full-color books, dioramas, booklets made of metal, wood, and plastic, USB drives encased in boxes, and objects such as bobbleheads are among the formats these items can take. As promotional materials, they are only intended to last as long as they are needed - at most a year - so nearly a decade later many are falling to pieces, their batteries long dead and glue seams failing. Preservation can be a challenge.

Curated from the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture Collection, this exhibit includes objects on loan from Robert Thompson, Trustee Professor of Television, Radio, and Film at Syracuse University. The Bleier Center holds hundreds of uncatalogued promotional materials; those appearing in this exhibit are but a sample.

Robles-Gordon’s work has long been rooted in self-awareness, reflection and repair—of the self, of collective memory and of the environments we inhabit. Drawing from Afro-Caribbean spiritual traditions, decolonial histories, feminist thought and ecological consciousness, her artworks operate as sites of reckoning and renewal. They ask viewers to confront inherited systems of harm while offering space for breath, ritual, protection and transformation. The exhibition is organized into three interrelated sections, each articulating a distinct yet overlapping mode of healing and awareness.

As a focal aspect of this exhibition, Robles-Gordon creates installations that build upon history, personal and ancestral memory and Afro-futurism to establish bird and totemic like data transference structures. Her installation formula is grounded in visual and/or asymmetrical balance. Each installation centralizes the idea of a bird. Artworks are arranged in pairs. One for the left side and its pair on the right side to create the wings. Ultimately, manifesting transference mechanisms in an asymmetrical arrayment of aesthetic and didactic messaging.

At the heart of the exhibition is a curatorial inquiry: How do artists with disabilities navigate the art world—and the world at large—on their terms? And how does that navigation inform their work, influence its reception, and expand the field of cultural production? The goal is not to position disability as a central or singular theme, but to acknowledge it as one of many intersecting conditions—of body, mind, culture, history—that inform artistic practice. In doing so, this exhibition prompts us to reconsider who gets seen, whose experiences shape the canon, and how institutions can create more equitable conditions for artistic participation and recognition.

Exhibiting artists include Beverly Baker, Derrick Alexis Coard, Courttney Cooper, Joseph Grigley, Em Kettner, Reverend Joyce McDonald, William Scott, Kambel Smith, Katz Tepper, Melvin Way, and Peter Williams.

In this influential text, Clark posited that the presence of the nude in art, existed above and beyond cultural circumstances, as a timeless, almost abstract ideal. He advanced a distinction between "naked" and "nude," with the latter explained as an idealization, or an evocation of timeless ideals. To the contrary, this exhibition presents nudity in art as a phenomenon that is time-bound and culturally determined.

This exhibition is curated by Wayne Franits (Distinguished Professor and Department Chair, Art and Music Histories) and the eight senior Art History majors enrolled in the Fall 2025 course HOA 498: Senior Seminar, Research and Professional Practice.

Currently serves as a professor of practice of public administration and international affairs at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School, as the chairman of the sustainable chemical startup Sudoc, and as a board member of the RAND Corporation, SkyTruth and Oxfam America.

María Laura Veramendi García is a Ph.D. candidate in the Political Science Department at Syracuse University. She holds an M.P.A. from the Maxwell School and a licentiate degree in sociology from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. Her research examines the comparative political economy of social policy in Latin America, with particular attention to business power and the policy legacies of authoritarian rule in shaping social policy processes and the realization of social rights.

Why were there no extradition treaties between China and most Western countries historically? Jenny Huangfu Day traces how the fugitive rendition clauses in the Opium War treaties evolved into informal extradition practices and argues that China’s inability to secure reciprocal extradition treaties was rooted in the legacy of extraterritoriality and semi-colonialism.

Through an examination of a series of landmark but often overlooked extradition cases between China and foreign powers—especially between Canton and the colonial government of Hong Kong—she challenges the notion that “political crimes” in modern China emerged solely as a domestic legal construct, instead situating them in transborder legal and diplomatic processes open to interpretation and maneuvering by both state authorities and the broader transborder population.

Jenny Huangfu Day is an associate professor of history and the Francis Tang ‘61 Chair of China Studies at Skidmore College, N.Y. She is the author of Qing Travelers to the Far West: Diplomacy and the Information Order in Late Imperial China and Transborder Fugitives, Extradition, and Political Crimes in Modern China.

Title: Interface Engineering Across Scales: Controlling Transport, Reaction, and Stability in Energy Materials

Abstract:

Performance, safety, and durability in energy systems are fundamentally governed by interfaces. Electrochemical reactions, ionic and electronic transport, stress evolution, and thermal instability originate and propagate at heterogeneous boundaries. My research focuses on the rational design of multifunctional interfaces that couple transport regulation with chemical and mechanical stabilization across length scales.
In lithium-based batteries, we develop ultra-thin mixed ionic–electronic conducting (MIEC) interlayers to stabilize graphite and lithium metal anodes. These interlayers homogenize current distribution, suppress dendrite nucleation, mitigate parasitic interfacial reactions, and enhance tolerance to electrochemical and mechanical abuse without compromising rate capability. Extending this interfacial design philosophy, we are engineering ultra-thin all-solid-state battery architectures in which interfacial resistance, chemo-mechanical mismatch, and lithium penetration are addressed through nanoscale interface control rather than bulk material substitution. By minimizing inactive thickness and precisely regulating solid–solid interfaces, we aim to achieve high energy density with improved intrinsic safety.
The unifying theme of this work is interface-enabled control of coupled ion transport, reaction kinetics, and structural evolution under extreme operating conditions. I will discuss underlying design principles, mechanistic insights, and scalable pathways for translating interfacial engineering strategies into next-generation energy technologies.

In Islam, Friday prayer, or Congregational prayer (Arabic: صَلَاة ٱلْجُمُعَة Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah), is a prayer (ṣalāt) that Muslims hold every Friday after noon, instead of the Zuhr prayer. Muslims ordinarily pray five times each day according to the sun's sky path, regardless of time zones. Youm Jumu’ah ("day of congregation"), or simply Jumuah means Friday in Arabic. In many Muslim countries, the weekend is inclusive of Fridays, and in others, Fridays are half-days for schools and some workplaces. It is one of the most exalted Islamic rituals and one of its confirmed obligatory acts.

Healing Forward: Rituals of Self-Repair, Cultivation of Community, and Collective Activation is a retrospective exhibition that traces the throughline of healing—personal, communal, spiritual, and ecological—across the artistic career of Amber Robles-Gordon. Bringing together installations, quilts, assemblages, and collages created over more than a decade, the exhibition reveals how healing has functioned not only as a thematic concern, but as a methodology and ethical framework within the artist’s practice.

Robles-Gordon’s work has long been rooted in self-awareness, reflection, and repair—of the self, of collective memory, and of the environments we inhabit. Drawing from Afro-Caribbean spiritual traditions, decolonial histories, feminist thought, and ecological consciousness, her artworks operate as sites of reckoning and renewal. They ask viewers to confront inherited systems of harm while offering space for breath, ritual, protection, and transformation. The exhibition is organized into three interrelated sections, each articulating a distinct yet overlapping mode of healing and awareness.

As a focal aspect of this exhibition Robles-Gordon creates installations that build upon history, personal and ancestral memory and Afro-futurism to establish bird and totemic like data transference structures. Her installation formula is grounded in visual and/or asymmetrical balance. Each installation centralizes the idea of a bird. Artworks are arranged in pairs. One for the left side and its pair on the right side to create the wings. Ultimately, manifesting transference mechanisms in an asymmetrical arrayment of aesthetic and didactic messaging.

The Temple of Our Survival is new video work commissioned by Light Work for projection at UVP exploring what survival means and looks like through a series of interviews conducted by the artist with local care workers, land stewards, and cultural workers in her nomadic film set and project space.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Wormsley will be present for a special indoor film screening and panel talk on Thursday, March 19.

The Temple of Our Survival

While in-residence in Syracuse, Wormsley worked with Sankofa Reproductive Health and Healing Center, setting up her eponymous traveling film set and workshop space “The Temple of Our Survival” for the month of July. A work of art in its own right, the Temple is a massive tent draped in quilts made of vibrant traditional fabrics and sewn by the artist in designs invoking her own ancestral histories of migration and search for refuge.

In Wormsley’s own words, “This set is mobile not just for convenience but as a signifier of our relationship to land and landscape. That relationship is migrant. Ancestrally adapting to weather, plant-life, water and resources in every part of this country and beyond. The resilience is of the spirit.”

The Temple of Our Survival filmset has travelled to a total of eight sites around the country. At each of these, the artist held workshops using herbs grown in her grandmother’s garden and conducted interviews with local care workers, land stewards, and cultural workers, each of whom shared their own stories of and strategies for survival.

About the Artist

Alisha B Wormsley is an interdisciplinary artist and cultural producer. Her main concern is to transform the world into a place where people can live. Her work has been shown at REDCAT in Los Angeles, Participant, INC, Cue Arts, and the Bronx Museum in NYC, and at the Andy Warhol Museum and Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh, among many other venues. In 2020, Wormsley launched an artist residency for Black artists who M/other called Sibyls Shrine that supports over 150 artists. Wormsley is a 2022 Guggenheim Fellow in Fine Arts and an Assistant Professor of Social Practice at Carnegie Mellon School of Art.

In addition to being awarded a UVP Residential Commission, this project has won an Anonymous was a Woman NYFA Award, a Pittsburgh Foundation grant and the Sundance Interdisciplinary grant.

FYC materials take many forms, from basic physical media, including DVDs, to far more elaborate objects. Felt-covered full-color books, dioramas, booklets made of metal, wood, and plastic, USB drives encased in boxes, and objects such as bobbleheads are among the formats these items can take. As promotional materials, they are only intended to last as long as they are needed - at most a year - so nearly a decade later many are falling to pieces, their batteries long dead and glue seams failing. Preservation can be a challenge.

Curated from the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture Collection, this exhibit includes objects on loan from Robert Thompson, Trustee Professor of Television, Radio, and Film at Syracuse University. At the heart of the exhibition is a curatorial inquiry: How do artists with disabilities navigate the art world—and the world at large—on their terms? And how does that navigation inform their work, influence its reception, and expand the field of cultural production? The goal is not to position disability as a central or singular theme, but to acknowledge it as one of many intersecting conditions—of body, mind, culture, history—that inform artistic practice. In doing so, this exhibition prompts us to reconsider who gets seen, whose experiences shape the canon, and how institutions can create more equitable conditions for artistic participation and recognition.

Exhibiting artists include Beverly Baker, Derrick Alexis Coard, Courttney Cooper, Joseph Grigley, Em Kettner, Reverend Joyce McDonald, William Scott, Kambel Smith, Katz Tepper, Melvin Way, and Peter Williams.

The exhibition is curated by Daniel Fuller G’04 (Museum Studies, College of Visual and Performing Arts).

In this influential text, Clark posited that the presence of the nude in art, existed above and beyond cultural circumstances, as a timeless, almost abstract ideal. He advanced a distinction between "naked" and "nude," with the latter explained as an idealization, or an evocation of timeless ideals. To the contrary, this exhibition presents nudity in art as a phenomenon that is time-bound and culturally determined.

This exhibition is curated by Wayne Franits (Distinguished Professor and Department Chair, Art and Music Histories) and the eight senior Art History majors enrolled in the Fall 2025 course HOA 498: Senior Seminar, Research and Professional Practice.

Keynote Speakers

Professor Kishonna Gray is a Professor of Racial Justice and Technology at the University of Michigan’s School of Information and Director of the Intersectional Tech Lab. Based on analyses of game play, platform design, and digital infrastructures, she interrogates the impact that technology has on culture and how minoritized users influence the creation of technological products and the dissemination of digital artifacts.

Professor David DeLiema is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Minnesota. His research attends to the conversations and designs that shape how learning emerges from moments of impasse, including in naturalistic social interaction, technology-rich settings, play-based activities, and embodied movement.

About the workshop: The Talking Stick Project is a workshop structured around the artwork of interdisciplinary visual artist Amber Robles-Gordon, the life of Henrietta Lacks, the use of talking sticks across Indigenous cultures worldwide, and setting positive intentions for our collective future.
The Talking Stick Project is an interactive community art experience rooted in dialogue, reflection, and collective intention. Designed and facilitated by interdisciplinary visual artist Amber Robles-Gordon, this workshop draws from her long-standing exploration of public and participatory art, social memory, and storytelling. The Talking Stick Project invites participants to engage with artistic practice by creating “talking sticks” — objects historically used by Indigenous cultures worldwide to designate the authority to speak and to encourage respectful listening and shared reflection.
Inspired in part by Robles-Gordon’s work exploring the life and legacy of Henrietta Lacks — whose cells have had a profound impact on medical research — this workshop situates art-making as a space for exploring personal and collective narratives, connecting individual intention with broader histories and futures.
Across iterations of the Talking Stick Project — such as Salisbury University, National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum and the If You Lived Here DC public installation — participants have been encouraged to use their creations as expressive tools: to share memories of home, reflect on social issues, and envision positive, community-oriented futures.

At the heart of the exhibition is a curatorial inquiry: How do artists with disabilities navigate the art world—and the world at large—on their terms? And how does that navigation inform their work, influence its reception, and expand the field of cultural production? The goal is not to position disability as a central or singular theme, but to acknowledge it as one of many intersecting conditions—of body, mind, culture, history—that inform artistic practice. In doing so, this exhibition prompts us to reconsider who gets seen, whose experiences shape the canon, and how institutions can create more equitable conditions for artistic participation and recognition.

Exhibiting artists include Beverly Baker, Derrick Alexis Coard, Courttney Cooper, Joseph Grigley, Em Kettner, Reverend Joyce McDonald, William Scott, Kambel Smith, Katz Tepper, Melvin Way, and Peter Williams.

The exhibition is curated by Daniel Fuller G’04 (Museum Studies, College of Visual and Performing Arts).

In this influential text, Clark posited that the presence of the nude in art, existed above and beyond cultural circumstances, as a timeless, almost abstract ideal. He advanced a distinction between "naked" and "nude," with the latter explained as an idealization, or an evocation of timeless ideals. To the contrary, this exhibition presents nudity in art as a phenomenon that is time-bound and culturally determined.

This exhibition is curated by Wayne Franits (Distinguished Professor and Department Chair, Art and Music Histories) and the eight senior Art History majors enrolled in the Fall 2025 course HOA 498: Senior Seminar, Research and Professional Practice.

For Your Consideration (FYC) promotional materials are sent to advertising and trade publications, actors, directors, screening attendees and tradespeople. Voting takes place during both nomination and final voting periods. Only dues-paying members of the Television Academy are eligible to vote, though they can be influenced by others in the industry. Ethical rules govern the type and value of FYC materials. Gifts such as cars and Rolex watches are not allowed, but elaborate packages of the type shown in this exhibit are acceptable.

FYC materials take many forms, from basic physical media, including DVDs, to far more elaborate objects. Felt-covered full-color books, dioramas, booklets made of metal, wood, and plastic, USB drives encased in boxes, and objects such as bobbleheads are among the formats these items can take. As promotional materials, they are only intended to last as long as they are needed - at most a year - so nearly a decade later many are falling to pieces, their batteries long dead and glue seams failing. Preservation can be a challenge.

Curated from the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture Collection, this exhibit includes objects on loan from Robert Thompson, Trustee Professor of Television, Radio, and Film at Syracuse University. The Bleier Center holds hundreds of uncatalogued promotional materials; those appearing in this exhibit are but a sample.

Robles-Gordon’s work has long been rooted in self-awareness, reflection and repair—of the self, of collective memory and of the environments we inhabit. Drawing from Afro-Caribbean spiritual traditions, decolonial histories, feminist thought and ecological consciousness, her artworks operate as sites of reckoning and renewal. They ask viewers to confront inherited systems of harm while offering space for breath, ritual, protection and transformation. The exhibition is organized into three interrelated sections, each articulating a distinct yet overlapping mode of healing and awareness.

As a focal aspect of this exhibition, Robles-Gordon creates installations that build upon history, personal and ancestral memory and Afro-futurism to establish bird and totemic like data transference structures. Her installation formula is grounded in visual and/or asymmetrical balance. Each installation centralizes the idea of a bird. Artworks are arranged in pairs. One for the left side and its pair on the right side to create the wings. Ultimately, manifesting transference mechanisms in an asymmetrical arrayment of aesthetic and didactic messaging.

Participants will explore the many ways gender-affirming care supports well-being, especially for trans and nonbinary individuals, and how similar forms of care exist across all genders. We will unpack the impact of body image, policy debates, access barriers and the role allies can play in supporting inclusive and affirming spaces.

Voting takes place during both nomination and final voting periods. Only dues-paying members of the Television Academy are eligible to vote, though they can be influenced by others in the industry. Ethical rules govern the type and value of FYC materials. Gifts such as cars and Rolex watches are not allowed, but elaborate packages of the type shown in this exhibit are acceptable.

FYC materials take many forms, from basic physical media, including DVDs, to far more elaborate objects. Felt-covered full-color books, dioramas, booklets made of metal, wood, and plastic, USB drives encased in boxes, and objects such as bobbleheads are among the formats these items can take. As promotional materials, they are only intended to last as long as they are needed - at most a year - so nearly a decade later many are falling to pieces, their batteries long dead and glue seams failing. Preservation can be a challenge.

Curated from the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture Collection, this exhibit includes objects on loan from Robert Thompson, Trustee Professor of Television, Radio, and Film at Syracuse University. The Bleier Center holds hundreds of uncatalogued promotional materials; those appearing in this exhibit are but a sample.

Robles-Gordon’s work has long been rooted in self-awareness, reflection and repair—of the self, of collective memory and of the environments we inhabit. Drawing from Afro-Caribbean spiritual traditions, decolonial histories, feminist thought and ecological consciousness, her artworks operate as sites of reckoning and renewal. They ask viewers to confront inherited systems of harm while offering space for breath, ritual, protection and transformation. The exhibition is organized into three interrelated sections, each articulating a distinct yet overlapping mode of healing and awareness.

As a focal aspect of this exhibition, Robles-Gordon creates installations that build upon history, personal and ancestral memory and Afro-futurism to establish bird and totemic like data transference structures. Her installation formula is grounded in visual and/or asymmetrical balance. Each installation centralizes the idea of a bird. Artworks are arranged in pairs. One for the left side and its pair on the right side to create the wings. Ultimately, manifesting transference mechanisms in an asymmetrical arrayment of aesthetic and didactic messaging.

At the heart of the exhibition is a curatorial inquiry: How do artists with disabilities navigate the art world—and the world at large—on their terms? And how does that navigation inform their work, influence its reception, and expand the field of cultural production? The goal is not to position disability as a central or singular theme, but to acknowledge it as one of many intersecting conditions—of body, mind, culture, history—that inform artistic practice. In doing so, this exhibition prompts us to reconsider who gets seen, whose experiences shape the canon, and how institutions can create more equitable conditions for artistic participation and recognition.

Exhibiting artists include Beverly Baker, Derrick Alexis Coard, Courttney Cooper, Joseph Grigley, Em Kettner, Reverend Joyce McDonald, William Scott, Kambel Smith, Katz Tepper, Melvin Way, and Peter Williams.

The exhibition is curated by Daniel Fuller G’04 (Museum Studies, College of Visual and Performing Arts).

In this influential text, Clark posited that the presence of the nude in art, existed above and beyond cultural circumstances, as a timeless, almost abstract ideal. He advanced a distinction between "naked" and "nude," with the latter explained as an idealization, or an evocation of timeless ideals. To the contrary, this exhibition presents nudity in art as a phenomenon that is time-bound and culturally determined.

This exhibition is curated by Wayne Franits (Distinguished Professor and Department Chair, Art and Music Histories) and the eight senior Art History majors enrolled in the Fall 2025 course HOA 498: Senior Seminar, Research and Professional Practice.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Mark Salvador

Talk title: Thinking Differently About Research and Your Future Career,

Keynote Speaker Bio: Dr. Mark Salvador, Program Manager in DARPA’S Biological Technologies Office. His research interests include Earth observation and remote sensing, biosensing, and biocomputing.
Prior to coming to DARPA, Salvador served as president and principal scientist at Zi INC., where he provided technical and consulting expertise to numerous government and industry clients, including multiple DARPA offices. His resume also includes stints as chief engineer and product manager for airborne hyperspectral systems in the L3/Harris Exelis Geospatial Systems Division, deputy director, technology division for Logos Technologies, and manager for the Science Applications International Corporation’s Advanced Technology Applications Division. He also served as an aerospace/system safety engineer for the U.S. Navy. He has published multiple peer-reviewed journal articles and several book chapters and written numerous government reports.

At the heart of the exhibition is a curatorial inquiry: How do artists with disabilities navigate the art world—and the world at large—on their terms? And how does that navigation inform their work, influence its reception, and expand the field of cultural production? The goal is not to position disability as a central or singular theme, but to acknowledge it as one of many intersecting conditions—of body, mind, culture, history—that inform artistic practice. In doing so, this exhibition prompts us to reconsider who gets seen, whose experiences shape the canon, and how institutions can create more equitable conditions for artistic participation and recognition.

Exhibiting artists include Beverly Baker, Derrick Alexis Coard, Courttney Cooper, Joseph Grigley, Em Kettner, Reverend Joyce McDonald, William Scott, Kambel Smith, Katz Tepper, Melvin Way, and Peter Williams.

The exhibition is curated by Daniel Fuller G’04 (Museum Studies, College of Visual and Performing Arts).

In this influential text, Clark posited that the presence of the nude in art, existed above and beyond cultural circumstances, as a timeless, almost abstract ideal. He advanced a distinction between "naked" and "nude," with the latter explained as an idealization, or an evocation of timeless ideals. To the contrary, this exhibition presents nudity in art as a phenomenon that is time-bound and culturally determined.

This exhibition is curated by Wayne Franits (Distinguished Professor and Department Chair, Art and Music Histories) and the eight senior Art History majors enrolled in the Fall 2025 course HOA 498: Senior Seminar, Research and Professional Practice.

Specializing in cultural and medical anthropology, Stawkowski focuses on militarized and nuclear spaces, the political economy of health, and the socio-cultural legacies of Soviet era nuclear testing in Kazakhstan, where she has conducted more than a decade of fieldwork. Her recent book, Atomic Collective: Radioactive Life in Kazakhstan, examines how communities near the former Semipalatinsk Test Site navigate contaminated landscapes.

Her work has been recognized with the Anthropological Responses to Health Emergencies Policy Award from the Society for Medical Anthropology. She has collaborated on international projects examining Cold War radioactive legacies in Kazakhstan, the Marshall Islands and French Polynesia. Currently, she is engaged in collaborative and comparative research on tritium bioaccumulation and biomagnification in the Semipalatinsk Test Site region and the Savannah River Site in South Carolina.

Abstract:

Hate crimes are not only acts of interpersonal violence but also symbolic threats that signal group-based exclusion. While research documents psychological consequences among direct victims, an open question is whether hate crimes operate as vicarious, identity-based threats that shape health even before birth. This study examines whether prenatal exposure to local hate crimes affects birth outcomes.

We link over 650,000 birth records in Los Angeles County (2014–2020) to a novel database of hate crimes and estimate effects of ZIP code–level exposure—the most granular community definition to date—using fixed-effects models. Hate crime exposure increases preterm birth risk, with the strongest effects for incidents targeting the mother’s own racial/ethnic group. Among Black and Asian populations, race-specific hate crimes elevate preterm birth risk, while incidents targeting other groups do not, underscoring identity-based vicarious threat. Counterfactual decomposition analysis shows that Black infants are both disproportionately exposed to anti-Black hate crimes and especially vulnerable to their effects, compounding infant health disparities.

Bounds analyses addressing limitations of causal inference with aggregate treatments indicate large treatment-on-the-treated effects among mothers plausibly aware of the local hate crime incidents. The findings show that hate crimes are not merely episodic acts of violence against individuals but mechanisms of group stratification that shape intergenerational inequality.

Bio: Christopher Deeney is the Director of the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) and a Professor of both Physics and Astronomy and Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Rochester. He previously served as Chief Science and Technology Officer, National Security Directorate, at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), in addition to his years of experience at the Nevada National Security Site as a Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. He managed the almost $2 billion research and development portfolio for Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration. As a researcher and senior manager, he worked at Sandia National Laboratories and at Physics International. Chris is known as a scientific and innovation leader with direct experience running complex operations, especially in high-energy-density physics. LLE and the Omega Laser Facility operates the two largest lasers in an academic institution.

In his role as Director, Deeney manages the Laboratory’s senior management staff, providing executive-level guidance and direction. He participates in the day-to-day management of the 450-person Laboratory; fosters successful relationships among University Senior Leadership; federal, local, and state government officials; peer organizations and laboratories; Department of Energy; National Science Foundation; Department of Defense; private industry; and the local community. He participates in ongoing University strategy development. At LLE, he develops strategies with an emphasis on bringing high-quality science and technology solutions to address key challenges in fusion, high-energy-density physics, and laser technologies while maintaining effective operations of the academia’s largest lasers and educating future generations of scientists and engineers.

Chris received his Ph.D. in Plasma Physics from the Imperial College in the United Kingdom. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

Abstract: From fusion start-ups to newly discovered exoplanets making headlines, this is an exceptionally exciting moment for high energy density science—and one that gives the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) a compelling and forward-looking research agenda. As Professor Adam Frank of the University of Rochester has written, “The Universe is More in Our Hands Than Ever Before,” The Atlantic, January 3, 2023.

In this talk, we will review recent progress in high energy density science, encompassing experiments and theory at pressures exceeding 1 MBar, with applications spanning Department of Energy (DOE) and National Science Foundation (NSF) missions. Fusion represents an extreme realization of high energy density physics, reaching pressures on the order of 100 GBar. LLE is the national leader in direct-drive inertial confinement fusion, and we will discuss recent advances at the OMEGA laser, as well as the development of a fourth-generation laser system designed to deliver significantly enhanced performance and establish a pathway toward very high fusion yields and gains in a future facility.

Fusion fundamentally involves the conversion of mass into energy. With dramatic increases in laser intensity—enabled by the Nobel Prize winning invention of Chirped Pulse Amplification, at LLE—the experimental exploration of extreme physis regimes has become possible. These include frontiers in quantum electrodynamics, as well as progress toward the long-term goal of converting energy into mass in the vacuum, an objective that has generated intense international interest. LLE is currently developing what could become the world’s most powerful laser facility for NSF, NSF OPAL (https://nsf-opal.rochester.edu/) opening new and exciting frontiers in science as described in the Multi-Petawatt Physics Prioritization Report in 2022 (https://arxiv.org/pdf/2211.13187).

In the aftermath of the Soviet Union’s collapse, Kazakhstan inherited the remnants of one of the world’s most contaminated landscapes: the Semipalatinsk Test Site, known locally as the Polygon. Resigned to dispossession, residents have chosen to remain on the abandoned nuclear test site, despite the isolation and the radioactive environment, rather than face marginalization or the rigors of a neoliberal world. Atomic Collective examines this nuclear legacy through a decade-long ethnographic examination of the village of Koian, situated on the border of the test site. Facing residual radiation all around them and isolation, Koianers persist, reshaping their pastoral existence among the ruins and scientific debates surrounding genetic damage.

Drawing on first-hand accounts and archival research, this talk explores the resilience and everyday survival strategies of a community left behind to fend for itself in the shadow of nuclear testing. It offers a unique perspective on life in a nuclear zone and poses fundamental questions about human resilience and the impact of historical events on a collective identity. Atomic Collective sheds light on a community overlooked in the larger Cold War histories of atomic testing.

Magdalena Stawkowski is an associate professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of South Carolina. She earned a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2014. Specializing in cultural and medical anthropology, Stawkowski focuses on militarized and nuclear spaces, the political economy of health, and the socio-cultural legacies of Soviet era nuclear testing in Kazakhstan, where she has conducted more than a decade of fieldwork.

This hands-on nontechnical research roundtable invites participants to explore the workings of contemporary AI systems by looking behind the curtain of automation. Together, we will unpack how generative AI models are trained and maintained, with an emphasis on the hidden human labor, environmental destruction, and inequalities that make AI “work.” To examine why AI fails to serve humans, more-than-human worlds, and the planet, we will engage with accessible examples that reveal AI’s harms and will explore critical information and librarianship visions for technology that prioritize collective well-being over computational efficiency. For over two decades, Brown has been a cornerstone of the New York educational community as a full-time elementary art teacher at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Manhattan. In both the classroom and her studio, she champions the intersection of fine art and sustainability. Since trademarking Clockworks Press in 2016, she has emerged as a leader in the “Made in NYC” movement, producing a signature line of locally manufactured goods including the W28 Tote (up-cycled from US Navy camouflage), the Denim Clutch and her hand-printed denim pillows. Her commitment to “green” printmaking has led to multiple exhibitions in the Netherlands and a featured spread in Pressing Matters Magazine.

Brown’s portfolio is defined by high-profile creative synergy and a deep exploration of the color blue. Her notable collaborations range from portfolios with Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Charles Simic to sustainable art installations and collaborative pieces with Colombian artist De Ver Azul. Most recently, she debuted collective works with the Exquisite Blue Towers trio in Chelsea, NYC, and partnered with UK artist Ian Berry for the global #iclapfor project during the pandemic. She remains a prominent global voice in the print medium, teaching specialized printmaking workshops internationally, selling her work at local markets and representing the Speedball Professional Artist Network.

Brown holds an M.A. in art education from Brooklyn College and was an artist-in-residence at The Cooper Union. Her Syracuse-rooted craftsmanship is preserved in numerous private collections and the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, Yale and Princeton. Through her innovative collaborations and her mentorship of young artists, Brown continues to elevate the urban landscape through a lens of technical precision and environmental consciousness.

Every month during the academis year (usually on the last Thursday of the month), the ‘Cuse Catholic community gathers to make more than 700 sandwiches for the people served by Assumption Food Pantry on the Northside of Syracuse.

The Temple of Our Survival is new video work commissioned by Light Work for projection at UVP exploring what survival means and looks like through a series of interviews conducted by the artist with local care workers, land stewards, and cultural workers in her nomadic film set and project space.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Wormsley will be present for a special indoor film screening and panel talk on Thursday, March 19.

The Temple of Our Survival

While in-residence in Syracuse, Wormsley worked with Sankofa Reproductive Health and Healing Center, setting up her eponymous traveling film set and workshop space “The Temple of Our Survival” for the month of July. A work of art in its own right, the Temple is a massive tent draped in quilts made of vibrant traditional fabrics and sewn by the artist in designs invoking her own ancestral histories of migration and search for refuge.

In Wormsley’s own words, “This set is mobile not just for convenience but as a signifier of our relationship to land and landscape. That relationship is migrant. Ancestrally adapting to weather, plant-life, water and resources in every part of this country and beyond. The resilience is of the spirit.”

The Temple of Our Survival filmset has travelled to a total of eight sites around the country. At each of these, the artist held workshops using herbs grown in her grandmother’s garden and conducted interviews with local care workers, land stewards, and cultural workers, each of whom shared their own stories of and strategies for survival.

About the Artist

Alisha B Wormsley is an interdisciplinary artist and cultural producer. Her main concern is to transform the world into a place where people can live. Her work has been shown at REDCAT in Los Angeles, Participant, INC, Cue Arts, and the Bronx Museum in NYC, and at the Andy Warhol Museum and Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh, among many other venues. In 2020, Wormsley launched an artist residency for Black artists who M/other called Sibyls Shrine that supports over 150 artists. Wormsley is a 2022 Guggenheim Fellow in Fine Arts and an Assistant Professor of Social Practice at Carnegie Mellon School of Art.

In addition to being awarded a UVP Residential Commission, this project has won an Anonymous was a Woman NYFA Award, a Pittsburgh Foundation grant and the Sundance Interdisciplinary grant.
