What career opportunities are available to scholars whose work extends beyond the university? This core workshop for the Public Scholarship Certificate will explore some of the career options available to advanced degree-holders who can demonstrate experience with and commitment to publicly engaged work. Four recent PhD recipients will discuss their transitions to jobs within the academy, community-based nonprofits, and cultural institutions. They’ll offer tips on building your professional profile as a public scholar, scaffolding opportunities for public engagement while in graduate school, and making your engaged work a legible asset across career domains.

Panelists include:

  • Chelsea Bouldin (PhD, Cultural Foundations of Education, SU), assistant professor of ethnic, gender & disability studies, University of Utah
  • Tierney Brown (PhD, Anthropology, NYU), Buddhism public scholar, American Museum of Natural History
  • Madeline Olley (PhD, English, SU), business development and grants specialist, Pi515.org
  • Kirby Sokolow (PhD, Religious Studies, UPenn), engaged humanities postdoctoral fellow, SU
