Carrie Mae Weems stands on stage in front of a microphone.

Please join us on Monday, March 16, at 5 p.m. for a celebration of Syracuse University Artist-in-Residence Carrie Mae Weems as her six-year residency culminates. This moderated conversation will reflect on her residency and explore her recent work, creative practice, artistic journey and the questions that continue to shape her vision for the next generation of artists. Carrie will be joined in dialogue by recent collaborators Vijay Iyer (pianist) and Jennifer Koh (violinist), with the conversation moderated by Melissa Yuen, curator at the Syracuse University Art Museum.

Carrie Mae Weems is one of the most influential artists working today, internationally recognized for her powerful explorations of identity, history, power and social justice across photography, text, installation and video. For more than four decades, her groundbreaking work has examined the African American experience and the construction of historical narrative. Her recent honors include the National Medal of Arts (2024), the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography (2021) and a MacArthur Fellowship (2013), often referred to as the “Genius Grant,” awarded in recognition of her extraordinary originality and lasting impact on contemporary visual culture.
