The Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies presents Simone Browne, associate professor in the Department of African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, for the 2026 CRS Distinguished Scholar Lecture.
Browne, author of the award-winning book “Dark Matters: On the Surveillance of Blackness,” examines how surveillance technologies—from policing to AI—continue centuries-old patterns of tracking and controlling Black life. In her talk “And Bells On: Surveillance, and the Ring of Carceral Data Collection,” Browne previews work from her current book project, exploring the productive possibilities of rebellious methodologies and creative innovation when it comes to troubling surveillance and imagining Black life beyond the surveillance state.
This event is co-sponsored by the Syracuse University Humanities Center, School of Information Studies, and Department of Writing Studies, Rhetoric and Composition.
Free and open to the University community.
