Engagement that Sticks: How to Sustain Participation

Classrooms work best when students are actively engaged and participating. However, students often “check-out,” no longer taking an active role in the classroom or engaging the material. This session will explore ways TAs can maintain student engagement as the semester progresses in both discussion sections and lectures. We will focus on practical strategies that help prevent participation dips and low attendance, using lesson planning, group activities, and online tools. We will also focus on promoting active learning and community building for TAs overseeing undergraduate and master’s courses. This workshop is ideal for those who want to make their courses fun, interactive, and achieve stronger learning outcomes.
