Image of First-Generation Students and Graduate School

Navigating the path to graduate school can feel overwhelming, especially for first-generation college students. As part of SU's First-Gen Week programming, a panel of current and former first-gen grad students will demystify the process of applying to graduate programs, explore how life in grad school differs from the undergrad experience, and offer tips on managing academic expectations, maintaining family relationships, and accessing the resources you need to succeed. This is your chance to get an insider's view of grad school from a first-gen standpoint, so come with questions!
The panelists:

  • Austin Cabrera, Student Success Coach, New York Institute of Technology; MS, Higher Education (SU '23)
  • Nurzharkyn Samigolla, PhD student, Composition & Cultural Rhetoric; first-gen international student from Kazkhstan
  • Claudine-Lonje Williams, Program Manager, Barner-McDuffie House; PhD candidate, School of Education

BONUS: Attendees entered in drawing for free copies of the Graduate School Press book, On the Borders of the Academy: Challenges and Strategies for First-Generation Graduate Students and Faculty, edited by first-gen SU PhD alum Alecea Standlee (now at Gettysburg College).
