From Scopes to SCOTUS: 100 Years Fighting for Evolution Education

Amanda Townley, Executive Director of the National Center for Science Education, will give a special seminar hosted by Jason Wiles of the Department of Biology.

Abstract: The 1925 Scopes "Monkey" Trial is often remembered as a dramatic courtroom battle over the teaching of evolution in American schools. Nearly a century later, the tensions underlying that trial remain surprisingly relevant. Scopes is not only a moment in history but a lens through which we can explore ongoing resistance to evolutionary sciences. Despite consensus, teaching of evolution is still challenged around the United States and battles we thought were won years ago are seeing a resurgence in the modern era. Special attention will be given to current controversies, including those affecting textbook content, state standards and science teacher preparation. The talk aims to foster dialogue about the role of science education in society and the importance of defending evidence- based teaching in a polarized era.
