Practicing Ethical Research: A Hands-On Workshop for IRB, Data Ethics, and Community Collaboration

Led by Amanda Ni (doctoral candidate in Public Communications), this Core Workshop for the Public Scholarship Certificate supports graduate students and early-career researchers in navigating the ethical complexities of community-engaged research. Drawing from her IRB-approved studies with Asian domestic violence survivors and advocates in the U.S., Ni walks participants through expedited IRB protocols, inclusive consent language, ethical data collection and analysis, and amendment writing. The session emphasizes reciprocity and relational accountability, including how to reflect these principles in IRB language and research design. Participants will have time to draft or revise IRB materials and leave with practical tools for conducting rigorous, ethical, and community-engaged research.
