About this Event

The r-slur has a long and harmful history rooted in ableism, medicalization and the systemic exclusion of disabled people. Although it is often dismissed as a joke or minimized as being used without harmful intent, the word continues to reinforce stigma, dehumanization and the marginalization of disabled communities.
This workshop invites participants to critically examine the history, origins and continued use of the r-slur, reflecting on their own language choices and striving to better understand the impact of ableist language. Centering disability justice and lived experiences, the session encourages accountability and growth, developing skills to challenge harmful language in everyday interactions.
