This year, the Ukrainian Culture and Conversation Table invites you on a journey through the diverse regions of Ukraine. Together we will explore the Dnieper region; Podillia and Severshchyna, Slobozhanshchyna, Donbas and Tavria, Transcarpathia, Volyn, and Galicia; discovering each region’s history, traditions, prominent figures, places of memory, songs, clothing and cuisine.

Donbas: Ukrainian Frontier

Our first stop is the Donbas territories—currently under Russian occupation and claimed by Moscow as “Russian.” We will examine the geography of the ongoing war, as well as the debates surrounding government negotiations and sovereignty.

Once known as the “Wild Field”, the Donbas is the industrial heart of Ukraine: the country’s Rust Belt, a land of apricot orchards, and the home of FC Shakhtar Donetsk. Scarred by the Holodomor and immortalized by generations of Ukrainian poets, writers and artists, the Donbas today stands as a symbol of both resilience and tragedy.

Food and drinks provided.

This event will be hosted by Tetiana Hranchak, Visiting Research Scholar.
